KML files containing the public rights of way of Torbay

The council of Torbay provide a web page that downloads their public rights of way in the GeoJSON format.

The Council also provides information about public rights of way on its online map. I found that I needed to select "Public Rights of Way" from the "Service" menu. I also found it very useful to click the "Map camera controls" button at the bottom right of the map. It may be that their map uses more up-to-date information.

An authority's Definitive Map is the authoritative source of their rights of way. The details of the public rights of way network contained in an authority's data are for information only, and are an interpretation of the Definitive Map, not the Definitive Map itself, and should not be relied on for determining the position or alignment of any public right of way. For legal purposes, an authority's data does not replace their Definitive Map. And changes may have been made to the Definitive Map that are not included in their data. The authority's data contains Ordnance Survey data © Crown copyright and database right 2026. Attempting to view this data with more detail than 1:10000 may produce an inaccurate rendering of the route of a public right of way.

The council of Torbay have informed me that the data is made available under the terms of Open Government Licence v3.0. So it's possible for you to use this data provided you give the attribution that the data has been provided by the council of Torbay.

I have transformed the GeoJSON file into a KML file.

Unfortunately, the GeoJSON file does not have a field indicating the "type" of each path, i.e., where it is a footpath, a bridleway, a restricted byway or a BOAT. This web page says that Torbay only has footpaths and bridleways. This information is also missing from the above KML file. The data that I obtained from the Council in 2014 had lots of footpaths but only 3 bridleways (TQ/21, TQ/8z and PN/2). When in September 2024 I queried the missing field with the Council, they said that "there have been no changes". Please e-mail me if you see any other bridleways in Torbay. I have added the type (usually footpath but bridleway for TQ/21, TQ/8z and PN/2) when converting the KML file into the basic KML format that is used by this web site for all authorities. For each public right of way, this basic KML format has the name of the authority (Torbay), a unique number within the authority for the public right of way, the name or number of the parish/community/area, the name or number of the public right of way, the type of the public right of way (i.e., footpath, bridleway, ...) and any additional information about the public right of way that I've obtained from the data supplied by the authority. Here is a link to the converted KML file for Torbay.

This KML file has been augmented with additional information. For each public right of way, the augmented format also includes its length (in miles), the longitude and latitude of its first point, the longitude and latitude of its last point, the eastings and northings of its first point and the eastings and northings of its last point. Here is a link to the augmented KML file for Torbay.

This web site also provides information about the public rights of way of Torbay in GPX format, in CSV format and in GeoJSON format.
